Flags, veterans, and birdies. A patriotic combination over the Memorial Weekend in Owasso, where the Folds of Honor Foundation benefit saw PGA golf professionals, military personnel, and celebrities teeing it up for a good cause.
Officially, the 2011 Patriot Cup was declared a three-way tie between Josh Teater, Scott McCarron, and Tom Pernice, Junior, playing with A.J. Winters, Merle Norman, and Brian Dorarski, respectively. The three pairs all managed a 66, despite the windy conditions.
Local favorite Rickie Fowler finished in the eight-spot with a 69.
There were plenty of big-name golfers present for the second-annual event at Owasso’s Patriot Golf Club. Corey Pavin, Bo Van Pelt, Loren Roberts, Tom Lehman, Brad Faxon, Craig Stadler, Todd Hamilton, Hunter Mahan, and Peter Jacobsen were among the many tour professionals in attendances.
Celebrities included singer Vince Gill, an Oklahoma native, and former TU coach and current University of Kansas basketball coach Bill Self, who declared the event to be a “great time,” while apologizing for his golf-skills. (For the record, Self did not finish last…)
The event is intended to raise money for college scholarships for military personnel and the families of servicemen and women who lost their lives in the military.
